Box

Stock No 1157

English Oak sloped writing Box in lovely original condition, circa 1660.  It is of wonderful colour and surface quality, with its original butterfly hinges.  The front panel has a design typical of that used in vernacular furniture throughout Yorkshire at the period with its three very distinctive masks and foliate design.  The masks are reminiscent of the early Nordic style of “tear drop” heads used for the Pagan God Odin, and probably draw on the traditions going back to the Viking settlers in the North of England in the early Medieval periods.  The edges are all double notched indicative of the quality of this piece.  Inside is the original shelf with two drawers supported by it
