Inlaid Chest

English Oak Inlaid Chest, probably from the Leeds area, circa 1580 – 1600. It is of outstanding quality and has the good fortune to have retained its original pad feet. The inlaid panels to the front and sides, are set within Classical arches. The front two panels are decorated with birds either side of stylised foliage. The classical arches have spandrels, each with leaf design decorated with a flower head. The pillars have deeply carved “S” scrolls. The top rail has a lovely carved running strap-work design along it, and the stiles have deeply carved Guilloche motifs from top to bottom.  The centre of the top boards is branded with the initials “RE”.  The three plank top is attached by its original tinned hinges.  There is some shrinkage to the bottom boards giving some movement around the grooving
