Beam Cap (SN2845)

English Oak carved Corbel

English Oak carved Corbel from the base of roof wall posts, circa 1480.   It depicts an Angel, and is typical of East Anglian carving of this period, and is most probably from Suffolk.  Stylistically the hair, cape and collar and surplus are very similar to those illustrated in “English Medieval Furniture and Woodwork”, Charles Tracey, V & A, 1988, see Figures 38 – 40, Page 42.  There are small losses to the hands and a small amount of long dead insect damage to the back
