Pair of Carvings (SN2856)

Pair of Carvings

Pair of French Oak Carvings circa 1650.  They are carved in a charming, almost folk style, with depictions of Birds eating fruit above a spray of three leaved Clover.  The outer rim has scratch carved “dog tooth” decoration.  It is probable that they had a religious symbolism with the three-leaf clover representing the Holy Trinity, and the fruit, possibly grapes, representing the blood of Christ.  The backs have been scraped off and stained
